For research and development-oriented startups, technological and research achievements are important assets that support their business competitiveness. However, if a business proceeds without fully considering the protection and utilization of intellectual property, it may face challenges at the stage of expanding overseas and collaborating with other companies.

Especially in overseas markets, consideration must be given from a perspective different from that in Japan, such as national patent systems, the rights status of competing companies, and the handling of intellectual property with joint development partners. Furthermore, intellectual property strategies play an important role not only in protecting technology but also in enhancing business advantages and facilitating investment and business partnerships.

In this article, we will discuss intellectual property strategies that startups should consider from the early stages of growth. Through the perspective of how to approach patent acquisition, preparations for overseas expansion, and the relationship between business strategy and intellectual property strategy, we will consider what should be prepared now to compete globally.

About intellectual property strategies to compete globally

For startups, intellectual property is not only essential for protecting their own technology but also for enhancing their business competitiveness and supporting growth. Especially when aiming for overseas expansion, it may be necessary to consider early on issues such as which technologies to license, which countries to patent, and how to handle intellectual property in collaboration with business partners.

On the other hand, for startups that are trying to grow their business with limited funds and personnel, it is not always optimal to license all their technologies. It is important to determine what to protect and what to leverage based on their strengths and business direction.

In this seminar, we will cover the basic concepts of intellectual property that startups should keep in mind, from the perspective of business growth and intellectual property strategies aimed at overseas expansion. An opportunity to consider what intellectual property strategy is needed in light of our own technology and businessLet's say that.
