(Head office: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director and Group CEO: Yukihiro Maru), a group company of LIVERNESS Co.144 Ventures Pte. Ltd. (Head Office: Singapore; Representative: SHU SHENG CHIA), together with the Toyo Seikan Group, is pleased to announce the launch of a new cell tech venture from A*STAR in Singapore. ImpacFat Pte. Ltd. (Head office: Singapore, Representative: Mandy Hon).
In addition, with the aim of producing ventures like ImpacFat that accelerate commercialization by leveraging the biotech infrastructure in Japan and Singapore, the Liverness Group has launched the "Bio Garage Initiative" in collaboration with a Singaporean biotech company Esco Aster Pte. (Singapore) and Esco Aster Pte.
■Background of investment in ImpacFat
ImpacFat has developed the world's first omega-3 fatty acid-containing fish fat production technology using proprietary stem cell technology, providing a sustainable functional raw material that can replace conventional fish oil and animal fat. Through this investment, the company will establish the largest wet-based shared laboratory in Tokyo, "TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY Link Scholars' Hub Lab (LiSH Lab), our first base outside of Singapore. With this move, the company aims to expand its presence in Japan in earnest, strengthen ties with Japanese research institutes, companies, and government, and supply safer and more sustainable omega-3 fat materials for foods, supplements, and cosmetics.
The relationship between the RIVANES Group and ImpacFat began in 2014 when RIVANES Representative Director and Group CEO Yukihiro Maru visited A*STAR and met ImpacFat's founder, Shigenori Sugii. Mr. Sugii was working on stem cell commercialization as a Scientfic Advisor at Celligenics Pte. Ltd. at the time, and participated in TECH PLANTER Singapore held in Singapore in August 2016 and TECH PLANTER in Japan in September 2016 The company was selected as a finalist in the 3rd Biotech Grand Prix in Singapore in August 2016 and in Japan in September 2016. Subsequently, in March 2022, ImpacFat was established to commercialize cultured fish fat, with a 2023TECH PLANTER SingaporeAs a finalist in the "Japan International Competition", I met JR East, which was participating in the competition as a partner company.
Since our meeting with Mr. Sugii in 2014, while supporting ImpacFat as the Rivanes Group, we invested in ImpacFat from the Rivanes Group 144 Ventures together with the Toyo Seikan Group to strengthen our support for ImpacFat's expansion into Japan, taking advantage of the opening of LiSH Lab in May 2025. The investment was made by the Toyo Seikan Group.
About the Bio Garage Concept
In general, social implementation of biotech ventures is said to be an area with high hurdles to commercialization due to the many issues involved, such as scale-up, regulation, financing, and collaboration with major companies.
In this case of ImpacFat, the company has established fish fat production technology by utilizing cell culture equipment developed by Singaporean biotech company Esco Aster Pte. Ltd. (headquartered in Singapore), and has moved into LiSH Lab and entered the Japanese market.
In the future, the growth of biotech ventures will require a mechanism like ImpacFat, where Japan and Singapore can collaborate to promote commercialization. The Bio Garage concept is a platform to accelerate R&D and commercialization of biotech ventures by leveraging the biotech foundations of both Japan and Singapore.
Esco Aster is a biotech platform company with the world's first and only GMP-compliant contract manufacturing facility licensed to produce cultured meat in Singapore. The Singapore base has a shared lab where research equipment can be rented out, enabling biotech ventures to accelerate commercialization by utilizing Esco Aster's biolab. Furthermore, in order to incubate biotech ventures on the Japanese side as well, the company moved into LiSH Lab in August 2025 and established a lab where cell culture equipment and biotechnology equipment can be rented.
The "Bio Garage Concept," a joint project launched by RIVERNESS and Esco Aster, will connect LiSH Lab in Japan and a biolab in Singapore to promote research that cannot be conducted inside a university by using a lab outside the university, and to build a system that allows both countries to use the same specifications of equipment and handle research data with a high degree of accuracy. The "Bio Garage Initiative" will connect the LiSH Lab in Japan and the Bio Lab in Singapore to promote research that cannot be conducted in the university, and to build a system that can handle research data with a high degree of accuracy while using the same spec equipment in both countries.
